Low bands seem still to be in a good shape. Winter conditions are not yet over, though it hasn’t been that cold as it used to be when younger (or is it just golden memories..).
Once in a while a good dx is caught. This month it was K5D, Desecheo Island, on 20m cw just with less than 5 minutes of calling.

QSOing started with FW5RE on 40m cw on the 1st February and ended 28th February with G7ERX/P at Gatwick airport on 80m ssb.

QSOmonth - January 2009

Sunspot minimum seems to continue, but conditions are getting more variable day by day. Perhaps I should start planning antennas for higher bands. A new year, new promises. This Spring I will fine tune the vertical and add more bands. I have pulleys at the 16 m guying point. Well, we will see..

QSOing started with W1FW on 80m cw on the on new year’s day. The last QSO was with JA9GCW on 80m cw on 31st January.

QSOmonth - December 2008

E-mail Print PDF

Year by year Winter seems to be less and less. We got some snow in November for a few days.  And again in mid-December, but no white Xmas in Helsinki area. Similar fluctuations seemed to dominate December working conditions on low bands. Conditions were good for a couple of days per time, then got bad with high noise levels but could abruptly open to Far East/Australia in the afternoons just before dusk- or to East Coast in the late mornings.

QSOing started with 8Q7GC on 40m cw on the third. Got even JA-mini pileups a couple of times on 80m cw in December. The last QSO was with JA6GT on 80m cw just two hours before New Year.

December QSO statistics:

DX 77 (72 on cw, 5 on ssb)
EU 36 (30 on cw, 6 on ssb)
————————————-
QSO total 113 (102 on cw, 11 on ssb)

Band
————————————-
80m 70 (66 on cw, 4 on ssb)
40m 39 (32 on cw, 7 on ssb)
30m 3 (3 on cw, – on ssb)
20m 1 (1 on cw, – on ssb)

Band highlights:
80m FM5, K6, VK
40m AH2, VP9

November conditions started strong on low bands with openings to all continents. First QSO was with KH6MB on 40 m cw and last with B1Z on 80m cw. CQ WW DX Contest gave me some cherry picking opportunities, though I could not spend much time working. My 40th Zone came with XE (Mexico, Zone 6) on 80 m cw and on first call.

November QSO statistics:

DX 104 (98 on cw, 6 on ssb)
EU 24 (24 on cw, 0 on ssb)
————————————-
QSO total 128 (122 on cw, 6 on ssb)

Band

40m 37 (24 on cw, 1 on ssb)
30m 9 (9 on cw, – on ssb)
20m 1 (1 on cw, – on ssb)
12m 1 (1 on cw, – on ssb)

QSOmonth - October 2008

E-mail Print PDF

October was a bit short month for me as I was travelling in the US for the second half of it.
QSOing started with JW8DW on the 2nd and ended on the 18th just before I leaving for the US. The last October QSO was with Hans DL7RQ at the FOC Bill Windle QSO Party. Hans is an FOC  member #451.
Sunspots are still rare, so the low band conditions are getting better day by day as Winter is coming closer. I could work some VKs on 80 and 40 meters at their gray zone time which is conveniently afternoon at my time zone.

October QSO statistics:

DX 32 (29 on cw, 3 on ssb)
EU 14 (13 on cw, 1 on ssb)
————————————-
QSO total 46 (42 on cw, 4 on ssb)

Band
————————————-
80m 14 (12 on cw, 2 on ssb)
40m 26 (24 on cw, 2 on ssb)
30m 5  (5 on cw, – on ssb)
20m 1  (1 on cw, – on ssb)

Band highlights:
80m VK
40m 9L1
30m 8Q7
20m OX
